The Cool Girls Table

Last night I shed my Mom title for a few hours and instead, happily wore the mantle of Groupie.

Ree Drummond (better known as Pioneer Woman) was in town for a book signing of her new cookbook. I have been reading her blog for years and even won one of her contests once (a gift card to Amazon.com with which I bought my camera). I envisioned having her sign my book and reminding her that we went way back and were old friends. And then she'd invite me to come to the ranch and work cattle with her and cook food and take pictures together. Or something like that.

She's looking right at me- we have such a connection!

What Actually Happened:

When I arrived at the event (45 minutes early), there were several hundred people already in line. Luckily, I had pre-ordered my book and my good pal, (and admittedly, my security blanket) *Casey, was already in line and saving me a spot.

Me and Casey, snapping a quick pic between moments of Moosh in Indy groupies approaching her

We were some of last people let into the Q & A venue. It was packed. We ended up with a pretty great spot, close to the podium and along the path where Ree walked in.

There's Ree walking right past me, so close I could reach out and touch her. But I didn't, because I have (almost normal) boundaries.

Ree was gracious and funny, answering every question and making us laugh. She told us her kids' and Marlboro Man's real names. She did her Ethel Merman impression. And she shared a great story about being introduced to "working cattle" by way of a thermometer, a branding iron, and cow poop up to her elbow. She added at the end, "Gloves were not provided to me."

Ooh, we're so close to the Pioneer Woman!

She snapped a few pictures of the crowd and even one of me taking a picture of her taking pictures. Hi, Ree! We both shoot Nikon! Let's be BFF! (Although, her camera is so big it looks like it ate my camera. Burp.)

I was so enthralled that I almost didn't notice I was standing next to two of my friends, Emily and Andrea!

After the Q &A we stumbled across a group of Utah bloggers that Casey knew. This is where the Cool Girls Table feeling began to really ramp up. This was a group of people who introduced themselves by first name, blog name. I've never been to a blog conference or any other blogging networking event so this was totally new to me.

In foreground, L-R Carina, Vanessa, Marie, Casey

I was just jazzed to be in their little group for the moment but all the while feeling like a Spaz.

Me spazzing it up with (L-R) Allison, Carina, Emily, Vanessa, and Marie

We soon parted ways to suss out the actual book signing situation.

After the Q & A, groups of 20 were to be let in the (teensy) bookstore to have their books signed, beginning with tickets marked "A". Casey and I were holding letter "J" tickets which meant at least a 2 hour wait in the cold. As we were mulling over our options, we met two ladies who had driven an hour to get to the event, only to find the cookbooks sold out and the tickets all gone. Casey insisted that they take her book AND ticket. She even came up with the brilliant plan to have Ree sign both the book AND the book jacket so that they could order another book and each have her signature. (Meanwhile, I kept holding tightly and selfishly onto my own book...)

We headed back to my car, both of us resigned to returning home to our mothering duties (bedtime, nursing, packing, etc.) On our way, we saw our Cool Girls Table huddled in the alley behind the bookstore. They were gathered around a tall, blond, skinny, pretty woman who looked remarkably like Heather Armstrong. We stopped in our tracks. Casey turned and said, "I think that was Dooce." I said, "We're friends with those girls now, let's get over there!"

We hustled over to the group and sidled up to their conversation. Casey introduced herself and in a very genuine and classy way made a connection with Heather. I chimed in at inappropriate times with gems like, "I'm Barbara! Our babies are the same age! I think I live by you!" and other such emphatic stalkerisms.

I took a photo of Casey and Heather together. I got up my courage and asked if I could have a photo with her, too. Just as I was handing my camera to someone, Dooce was needed inside the bookstore and she was whisked off into the brightly lit store to meet Ree while I was left in the dark, cold alley. I felt like the head Cool Girl had just told me that I couldn't eat lunch with her. (Although, Heather really was quite nice. It was just unfortunate timing).

A small group of the Utah bloggers was allowed inside to meet Ree. (They brought presents and had a Dooce-lubed entrance.) Carol was thoughtful enough to take my cookbook in with her to get it signed.

I stayed for awhile chatting with Allison, Marie and Carina about Charlie's superpowers, Kerry's blog, sleep training, breastfeeding, CJane, and Steve Clark for awhile until my hungry, tired baby at home could not wait for his mama any longer. I left the event without ever getting my face time with the Pioneer Woman, but I didn't mind. I got out of my comfort zone, made some new friends and left feeling like I belonged in that group sitting at the Cool Girls Table.

*Casey is definitely already one of the Cool Girls

Charlie- 30 weeks (7 months)

Charlie continues to be such a joy! I love his little developing personality. Here's some things about our little Cheby (like Che + Baby) this past month.

-He loves talking and practicing new sounds (da, ba, ma, hi, thhhhh, and many others that I'm not sure are part of the English language). Sometimes when he's complaining or crying, his voice distracts him from crying and he starts vocalizing more. It's like he's saying, "My voice! I remembered about my marvelous VOOICCCE!"

-He really enjoys playing in the Exersaucer that Chelsea loaned us. Just this week, he's started to jump in it in addition to playing with the toys. He has also figured out the Johnny Jump-Up. Jumping in any form is one of his favorite activities.

-He's slowly trying new foods. Mostly because mommy needs to get used to adding food into our daily schedule. He loves it and we're adding new foods all the time. So far: rice, sweet potatoes, yams, bananas, and apples.

-He loves sitting up in the grocery cart or in restaurant high chairs looking around and watching people.

-He has started leaning and reaching for me (and a few lucky others) when he wants to be held. Melt my heart.

-Charlie has a sippy cup that he's learning to drink water from and it is one of his favorite things to play with. He usually holds it upside down and chews on the bottom of it, but occasionally he gets the spout and drinks a little water. :)

-He's outgrown his infant car seat! We went shopping and picked out a new one and he looked so little in it! (Pictures to come).

He's growing up so fast! I just want to slow down time!

Halloween 2009

I really wanted to do a group theme for our family's costumes this year but could not decide on what to do. Eventually, we ended up as Dorothy, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz and I loved how our costumes came together.

On Friday, we hosted a party at our house. I tried to get pictures of everyone's costumes but I know I missed a few people! This was our first big party since having Charlie and it was a lot of work and really hard to juggle hosting duties, taking care of Charlie and snapping pictures. Luckily, my sister-in-law Kerry entertained Charlie for the first hour of the party. I would have been lost without her! We made it a potluck which helped lower the stress level, too.

Carley (chicken), Spencer (tiger) and Bart + Michelle (Construction worker and Hazard Cone). Funny moment: Bart was holding a tray of breadsticks and I cleared a spot on the table for him to put it down. He had to ask me to put it down for him because he couldn't bend his arms in his costume!
Quinn + Kristi (baseball coach (giant gut not pictured) and player)

Jesse, Brynn + Gavin (fire hydrant, dalmatian, and fire fighter)

Cody, Casey and Addie (dalmatians and Cruella DeVille)

Lindsey, Hailey and Tommy (Queen of Hearts, Alice in Wonderland, the Mad Hatter)

Breea and Dave (80's rockers)

the gals

Liz and Steve (Jelly fish and Tornado) (Steve had little toy trucks and buildings tangled all over him, hilarious!)

Lily and Steve (Tinkerbell and Cowboy)

Sam (Venom from Spider-man)

Jeris and Suzanna (Biggest Loser contestants)

Apparently, the Wizard of Oz theme was a popular one this year. It was fun to see everyone's interpretation!

Melanie and Bronco (Dorothy and Scarecrow)

The Dorothys (Melanie, Barb, and Andrea)

Maren and Ben(Balloon Boy)

My decorating attempt. For those of you familiar with my family's history on Halloween decorating, this was definitely the "lite" version. I missed my mom and dad's panache and flair for the dramatic this year!

On Halloween night, we put out a bowl of candy for our usually scant showing of trick-or-treaters (it was still mostly full when we got home!) and headed over to Grandma and Grandpa T's house (where they had 90+ trick-or-treaters!)

We had fun visiting with each other, watching the U game, and playing Beatles RockBand.

We had a good time for Charlie's first Halloween and continued creating traditions for our family!

6 month portraits

I'm learning more about myself every day, especially as I explore the roles of mother and photographer. On this particular day, I learned it is pretty difficult to fulfill both roles by yourself, especially with a baby who is still a wobbly sitter and likes to eat leaves. We had a good time anyway, just capturing the moment- Charlie at 6.5 months, the beautiful leaves, and my burgeoning photography skills- it was a good day.

Love the sun flare on this one!

Charlie meets Mo

Grandma and Grandpa T's neighbor got a puppy and we had go over and say hello. Charlie hasn't been around many animals in his short life (probably because I'm allergic) so he's pretty disinterested. We thought Mo was pretty cute, anyway.

Thanksgiving Point Farm

Two of my best friends have recently moved out of my ward. Wah wah. I miss seeing them and Charlie misses the company (now he is the only baby in the entire congregation. Yeah, every time there's a crying baby during church it's mine.) We met up at Thanksgiving Point to check out their little farmyard, Farm Country.

AUTUMN!

I love autumn in Utah- it is so gorgeous. We were in Chicago where it was cold, rainy and gray and we came home to blue skies and trees exploding in color. I was so enthralled that I kept trying to take pictures of the foliage while driving erratically- a little dangerous. There was even a rainbow one day which only added to the idyllic scenery! (Of course, since I took these pictures we've already had our first snowfall. Ah, Utah, your fickle seasons doth vex me so.)

So after getting a few pics with my iPhone, I actually broke out my big camera and took some time to take some real pictures. Charlie and I went to Grandma Sue's house. Charlie was the model, I was the photographer and Grandma was the assistant (photo shoots go much better with an extra set of hands).

I took these on the U campus later that day.

CHICAGO! (it's a loooong post)

Chicago was on our short list of places to visit. I had been watching for inexpensive flights and found one that coincided with my fall break from school. Around this same time, Sue (John's mom), was planning a garden, art and architecture tour for Chicago during mid-October for her garden design business (Shared Canopy). It ended up that we were going to be there at the same time! We were able to tag along with the Shared Canopy group quite a bit and experience parts of Chicago that we wouldn't have been able to otherwise. Thank you to Shared Canopy and Rick and Sue for your generosity and gracious hosting!

Even though we were in Chicago for six days, it still felt like a whirlwind trip! There's so much to see and experience there and I feel like we barely skimmed the surface. We will definitely go back! We took a lot of photos and this is just a small sample of all we saw (and photographed!)

We were a little unsure of how traveling with a young baby would be, but Charlie was awesome! He did so well on the flights, only crying for about 5 minutes during the descent into Chicago (and I was crying, too, from having a sinus infection and flying). This was his first trip and a whole lot of other firsts, too- airplane, train, taxi, and bus!

Our first night there (Monday) we walked around downtown a little bit- our hotel was right in the middle of everything! The Art Institute was just a block away.

Our hotel (with pink light bulbs for Breast Cancer Awareness month)

We stayed at the most amazing, beautiful, old hotel- the Palmer House Hilton. This was one of the cool features- a winding staircase that connected several levels.

Tuesday morning we went to Oak Park, where Frank Lloyd Wright built his home and studio. In the neighborhood are a dozen or so other homes he designed. We toured the home and studio and then walked through Oak Park to see the other homes. John and I are now Frank Lloyd Wright SuperFans.

The Gale home (which inspired his later work, Fallingwater)

It was a cold but beautiful day! Charlie was a great little traveler- we bundled him up in the stroller and he would nap away.

Our little traveler in Union Station- getting ready to board the Amtrak train

After the Oak Park excursion on Tuesday, we went to visit my Uncle Tim and Aunt Marie. They live about an hour outside of Chicago. We stayed a night with them and they watched Charlie while we went to the Chicago temple Wednesday morning.

We had so much fun with Tim and Marie. I rarely see them and it was so fun to just hang out and be together. They introduced us to Chicago deep dish style pizza, played with Charlie, made us meals and hosted us in their home. On Wednesday, they drove us into Wisconsin and we visited Mars Cheese Castle and a Jelly Belly factory.

Here we are at Mars Cheese Castle becoming cheese heads.

We went back into Chicago to join the Shared Canopy group at the Walnut room, a very fancy restaurant in Macy's. The building had this incredible Tiffany ceiling.

Thursday we went to the top of the Hancock tower and saw incredible 360 degree views of downtown Chicago and Lake Michigan.

From the Hancock tower, we walked down Michigan Avenue, aka the Magnificent Mile. We stopped by the Apple Store, the American Girl store, Ghiradelli, Hershey's, Downtown Dogs (for Chicago hot dogs), and Giordano's (for amazing Chicago deep dish pizza).

These planters are in front of every store and are each unique.

Johnny at the Apple store

We ended up in Millennium Park to see the beautiful outdoor sculptures and the Pritzker Pavilion. By then we had been walking in the rain for a few hours, so we didn't stay long.

Friday, we went to the University of Chicago campus to see another Frank Lloyd Wright home- the Robie house.

Me and Che in front of the art glass windows that exemplify Wright's style. The art glass adds visual interest, but it also allows for light to enter while still providing privacy.

After the Robie house, we walked to the HUGE Museum of Science and Industry. It was so cool and we could have spent a whole day there!

The highlight of the museum was visiting the sustainable and eco-friendly Smart Home. We got great ideas there and learned a lot about sustainable home design. (I also learned on this trip that I can nurse a baby while walking around during a tour!)

My favorite thing about the museum was seeing a real U-boat. It was GIGANTIC. The pictures do not do it justice- it was seriously enormous.

Later on Friday, we visited Millennium Park again to get more pictures in better weather.

Charlie and John investigating the famous "silver bean" sculpture. It's only been there since 2004 but it's already such an icon of Chicago.

The sculpture's actual title is "Cloud Gate" and from this picture, I can see why!

The Chicago skyline and the Pritzker Pavilion.

Friday night we enjoyed a delicious, authentic Italian meal at Trattoria No. 10 with Rick and Sue.

We loved it and can't wait to go back!
